Savannah Guthrie has announced she will be stepping away from the Today show after revealing she needs to undergo surgery following a long-running health issue.

During Friday morning’s broadcast, the 53-year-old co-host addressed viewers directly, explaining that she has been struggling with persistent voice problems that finally led to a clear diagnosis.

“Some of you may have noticed my voice has been very scratchy and has started to crack,” Savannah told audiences. “Well, I found out what it is.”
She revealed that doctors diagnosed her with vocal nodules and a polyp on her vocal cords — a condition that will require surgery early in the new year, followed by a period of complete vocal rest.

“It’s not a big, big deal,” she reassured viewers, “but I will need surgery and I’ll be off for a couple of weeks. So this is my last day for a little while.”
“This has been going on for years, honestly,” she admitted. “So to finally have a solution feels incredibly positive.”
‘Totally Silent’ Recovery Ahead
Following the procedure, Savannah will be required to remain “totally silent” during recovery — a daunting prospect for a broadcaster whose career depends on her voice.
Her Today colleagues immediately rallied around her on air. Co-host Sheinelle Jones, who previously underwent the same surgery, shared reassurance from experience.
“I had the same thing — the surgery is in and out,” Sheinelle said. “The silver lining is you’re given permission to be still. The house gets quiet. The kids want to help.”
In a light-hearted moment, Sheinelle even presented Savannah with a whiteboard to communicate while her voice heals.
Craig Melvin also offered support, telling her: “We wish you healing and a smooth recovery.”
NBC has not yet confirmed an exact return date for Savannah’s comeback to the show.
Not Her First Health Scare
This is not the first time Savannah has had to step away from the Today desk due to medical reasons. In recent years, she underwent multiple eye surgeries after suffering a retinal injury when her son accidentally struck her eye with a toy train in 2019.
The incident caused temporary vision loss and required retinal detachment surgery, cataract surgery, and several laser treatments.
Speaking previously about that ordeal, Savannah admitted the experience left her deeply shaken.
“That was probably the lowest I felt,” she once said. “I was really scared I might lose my sight.”
A Trusted Face Steps Back — Briefly
Savannah has been a fixture on Today since 2012 and currently co-hosts alongside Craig Melvin. A mother of two, she shares daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, 9, with her husband Mike Feldman.
For now, viewers will have to wait patiently as she focuses on her recovery — but her calm, honest farewell left little doubt that she plans to return stronger.
As Savannah put it herself: this isn’t goodbye — just a pause.
