ABC viewers were in tears as David Muir returned to World News Tonight to reveal the cause of death of beloved actress Catherine O’Hara, who died at the age of 71
David Muir fans have been paying tribute to Catherine O’Hara after the ABC host shared news of her cause of death.
The Home Alone actress sadly died aged 71 on January 30. It’s now been confirmed she died of a blood clot in the lung, with rectal cancer as the underlying cause, according to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Muir, 52, returned to host World News Tonight on Monday, February 9, after a weekend break and shared the new update with viewers. He began, “To the index of other news, the cause of death revealed tonight for actress Catherine O’Hara.
“The LA County Medical Examiner’s Office certifying the immediate cause of death as a pulmonary embolism, with rectal cancer as the underlying cause. O’Hara’s comedic roles were iconic, she was beloved. She was just 71.”
A clip of the ABC broadcast was shared on Instagram with the caption, “Actress Catherine O’Hara died of a pulmonary embolism, according to her death certificate by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, with rectal cancer listed as the underlying cause of death. David Muir reports.”
Fans rushed to the comments to share their thoughts on the sad update. “Such a tragedy. GOD BLESS YOU CATHERINE O’HARA,” one fan wrote.
Another commented, “So very sad. She is missed,” as a third person added, “The beloved actress Catherine O’hara will be deeply missed, her brilliant, legendary, and iconic legacy will live on forever. RIP!”

Catherine died after she was rushed to the hospital in serious condition, with the actress reportedly having trouble breathing. Her death was initially described as following a “brief illness.”
According to her death certificate, Catherine was cremated and her ashes were given to her husband, Robert ‘Bo’ Welch. She is also survived by the couple’s two adult sons, Matthew and Luke.
Catherine enjoyed a hugely successful career which spanned across five decades. She was best known for her roles in films like Home Alone and Beetlejuice and was most recently nominated for an Emmy for her performance as Patty Leigh in the Apple TV+ series The Studio.
Catherine was scheduled to return to the set of The Studio in mid-January for Season 2. However, she was unable to return to work due to “personal matters.”
