Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy has been missing from her home in Arizona since February 1, and authorities believe the 84-year-old may have been taken against her will
A friend of Savannah Guthrie’s mom has described her disappearance as “just a freaky thing,” while expressing her concerns for the missing woman.
Over the past few days, authorities have been looking for Nancy Guthrie, 84, who was taken from her home in Tucson, Arizona, against her will at the weekend. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said during a press conference that Nancy needs her medication daily – and without it, her life could be at risk.
While the motive for her disappearance remains a mystery, investigators do not believe the abduction was part of a robbery, home invasion or kidnapping-for-ransom plot, according to a person familiar with the investigation. Now, a friend – who is in a book club with Nancy – has said she didn’t seem to have issues with anyone prior to her disappearance.
Speaking to US Weekly, a worried Mary Ann Blevins said that Nancy “doesn’t have any enemies at all.” She added, “And this, it’s just a freaky thing.” She also said she’s not sure if Nancy was targeted because of her 54-year-old daughter Savannah, who is a co-host on the Today Show.
“Yeah. You know, her daughter is quite well known, and I don’t know if that has anything to do with it or not,” Mary Ann said. “She and her mother are very, very close.” Nancy had dinner with her daughter Annie – Savannah’s sister – and was reported missing on Sunday after she didn’t show up to church.
Mary Ann said she last spoke to her close friend a month ago, during their most recent meeting of their book club. She described Nancy as “just a beautiful person” who “always seems okay.” Following her mom’s disappearance, Savannah has been in Arizona and away from her Today Show desk.
In a social media post late on Monday, she asked supporters to “raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment. Bring her home.” A statement was also shared on behalf of Savannah and her family the Today Show, which read, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
Officials have said Nancy was last seen at 9.45pn on January 31 when she was dropped off at her home following a church event. Concern grew the next morning when she failed to attend Mass. The Pima Sheriff’s Office received a missing person report on February 1.
After initial searches of the area, including with use of drones and canines, efforts were “shut down” with the sheriff’s office confirming Nancy’s home was officially a “crime scene.” Authorities revealed concerning evidence was discovered inside the property, suggesting she did not “voluntarily walk out of her home.”
A person familiar with the investigation, who was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the case and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of an anonymity, said there were signs of forced entry at the home. nvestigators also found specific evidence in the home showing there was a nighttime kidnapping, the person said.
The person added that several personal items, including Guthrie’s cellphone, wallet and car, were all still at the home. They also said that investigators were reviewing surveillance video from nearby homes and information from area license plate cameras and analyzing local cellphone towers data.
