Katie Couric shares uplifting health update as she reflects on life after breast cancer diagnosis

Katie Couric is offering fans a hopeful update on her life after breast cancer — and her message is one of gratitude, perspective, and the life-saving power of early detection.
Speaking at the Project ALS 25th Anniversary Gala in New York, the veteran journalist said she feels “really, really well” and described herself as a “walking example” of why cancer screening matters. Couric said she was “extremely fortunate” that her cancer was caught at a very early stage, when treatment is most effective.
For Couric, that gratitude is deeply personal.
When she first revealed her diagnosis in September 2022, she shared that she had learned she had breast cancer on June 21, 2022 — a date she said was also her wedding anniversary. In her essay and Instagram post, she urged women not to delay screening, noting that she herself had been about six months late for her mammogram.
She later underwent surgery in July 2022, and doctors found the cancer had not spread to her lymph nodes. She then completed radiation treatment, turning what could have been a devastating late discovery into a survivable, closely watched health battle.
Now, looking back, Couric says she knows how lucky she was.
At the gala, she also acknowledged that many others facing breast cancer are not in the same position. She spoke with compassion about people who are in pain, anxious, or suffering through harsher treatment journeys, making clear that while she feels fortunate, she has not forgotten how frightening cancer can be.
That mix of relief and empathy has become central to the way Couric talks about cancer.
Long before her own breast cancer diagnosis, she had already become one of the most visible public advocates for cancer awareness in America, especially after losing her first husband, Jay Monahan, to colon cancer. Memorial Sloan Kettering recently highlighted her long-running cancer advocacy and the so-called “Couric Effect” tied to colon cancer screening awareness.

Now, breast cancer has made that advocacy even more personal.
Couric’s message remains simple but urgent: get screened, stay on top of appointments, and do not assume everything is fine just because you feel fine. Her story is a reminder that sometimes the most important health decisions are the ones people postpone — until they no longer can.
And for fans wondering how she is doing now, the answer appears to be reassuring.
Katie Couric says she feels well, feels grateful, and knows just how much that outcome depended on finding the cancer early.
For anyone going through cancer, the best encouragement is simple: stay close to the people who love you, keep asking questions, and lean on your doctors for guidance tailored to your situation. Couric’s story is a powerful reminder that early action can change everything.
