David Muir viewers were left furious at Donald Trump after the ABC host shared an update on the conflict in Iran.

The 52-year-old returned to host World News Tonight on Tuesday, March 3, after his show was pulled from the schedule in a major shakeup. Muir revealed U.S. embassies and consulates have been attacked in the war in Iran as he shared the president’s response.

The 79-year-old has admitted he was “surprised” by Iran’s decision to retaliate, something ABC viewers have ridiculed. Reporting on the events, Muir began, “Good evening, we begin tonight here with the breaking news on the war in Iran. Tonight, U.S. embassies and consulates are coming under attack and Americans stranded across the region.

“Late today, a drone strike reported near the U.S. consulate in Dubai. The drone coming down in a parking lot, fire breaking out. Just hours earlier, two drones hitting the U.S. embassy in Saudi Arabia. At least six embassies in the region now have closed tonight.”

Muir continued, “This evening, 24 hours after the State Department urged all Americans to leave the Middle East, Secretary of State Marco Rubio late today saying they’re now preparing military flights, charter flights, even coming up with land routes for Americans to try to get to other countries to try to get out.

“And tonight with Iran essentially shutting down the Strait of Hormuz, where so much of the world’s oil passes through. President Trump is now saying he will call on the U.S. Navy to escort ships through if necessary.”

He then handed over to ABC correspondent Ian Pannell for more. Pannell reported that U.S. citizens are currently “trapped in the war torn region.”

Pannell shared, “The State Department now scrambling to secure military aircraft and charter planes to get them out after telling Americans in 14 countries to evacuate.” Video then played of an Iranian drone hitting the U.S. consulate in Dubai.

Pannell said, “The U.S. embassy in Amman, Jordan, also targeted. And drone strikes shutting down the U.S. embassy in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Officials say so far, no one’s been injured in these strikes.”

A clip then played of Marco Rubio sharing the plan to get Americans out of the region. “It’ll be a variety of methods – charter flights, military flights and transports, expanded commercial opportunities and in some cases land routes that will allow them to go to neighboring countries who might have open airports,” he said.

Pannell continued, “Tonight, the president saying he was quote, ‘surprised’ by the scope of Iran’s retaliation across the region, even though Iran had clearly warned how it would respond.” The journalist also revealed oil and gas prices have risen after the shut down of the Strait of Hormuz.

Pannell revealed more than 700 Iranians have been killed in the U.S.-Israeli strikes. He said, “Today, there was a mass burial for the victims of the school attack which left more than 160 dead. The Pentagon yet to explain what happened.”

Reporting live, Pannell said, “David, amid this scramble to get Americans out, the State Department telling people to call a hotline. But when you dial the number, an automated message saying do not rely on the U.S. government for evacuation at this time.”

It comes as an Iranian drone strikes the U.S. consulate in Dubai. Ian Pannell has the latest.”

Viewers took to the comments to criticize Trump’s response to Iran’s retaliation. “SURPRISED? WHAT DID HE EXPECT? DUH!!!” on person questioned.

Another echoed, “Why was he surprised?!?” Mocking Trump’s way of speaking, a third person posted, “Planned so well. The best planning, people say they’ve never seen planning like this. Amazing planning I tell you.”

“So how they can leave with no flights around and no evacuation plans from the government!!!!!!!!” someone else fumed. Another sarcastically commented, “Unbelievable! Thanks Trump!”
