Sheinelle Jones’ name has a beautiful backstory.

During the chat on March 4, the TODAY with Jenna and Sheinelle co-host opened up about the origins of her first name and what makes it so meaningful.

“I know the ‘I’ makes no sense, but my mom is Sheila and then my dad is Darnell,” she told Jenna Bush Hager.

As it turns out, Sheinelle’s aunt is responsible for the lyrical amalgamation of the two names.

“Aunt Patricia came up with, ‘What if we put their names together and it makes Sheinelle?’” she continued.

Jenna was impressed.

“That’s like the early Bennifer,” she said, referring to the popular combination of Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez’s names while they were romantically involved.

Sheinelle agreed that her aunt was “ahead of her time.”

She also acknowledged that the unique spelling of her name has caused some challenges for her over the years.

“I had a news director once who asked me to change the spelling of my name. He was like, ‘You should make it Chanel just so that everybody can understand what it is,’” she recalled. “And at the time I thought maybe I should. And then I was like, ‘No, that’s not my name.’”

Jenna said she’s proud of Sheinelle for keeping the original spelling of her name.

“I love that you kind of stuck to your guns,” she said.

“Which is why this show is so special,” Sheinelle added, referencing the name TODAY with Jenna & Sheinelle.

Jenna said Sheinelle is lucky to have been named after “two of the people who you love most in the world.”

In 2018, Sheinelle took to social media to poke fun at the unique spelling of her name. On Instagram, she shared a photo of an Elle magazine story that mentioned her and revealed that she’s used the magazine’s name as a way to describe the spelling of her name for a long time.

“For YEARS I’ve explained how to remember to spell my name: ‘SHE-IN-ELLE magazine’ … and now I really am! I’m in Elle! My picture at least … alongside @beyonce & @lupitanyongo as examples of how some of us showcased black excellence for Halloween! So beyond awesome!!” she wrote.

Sheinelle continued her post, explaining that her moniker is a combination of her parents’ names.

“Side note — my mom’s name is ‘Sheila,’ my father is ‘Darnell’ — put it together and it equals ‘Sheinelle,’” she wrote.
