Viewers of David Muir were split in their reactions after he reported on a targeted shooting during his ABC World News Tonight broadcast.

On Monday, April 6, Indianapolis city councillor Ron Gibson’s residence came under attack while he and his eight year old son were inside. The assailant left behind a message indicating Gibson was targeted due to his stance on data centers.

Gibson had recently cast a vote supporting the development of a data center in Indianapolis’ Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood. Video footage captured in the aftermath revealed his front door peppered with bullet holes and a glass door entirely destroyed. Muir covered the story during his Tuesday, April 7 broadcast of ABC World News Tonight. It comes after David Muir viewers were ‘visibly moved’ over a heartbreaking segment.

Broadcasting from the studio, the 52 year old anchor stated, “Tonight, the FBI joining the investigation into what Indianapolis police say was a targeted shooting at a city council member’s home. Councillor Ron Gibson and his eight-year-old son were home at the time.

“Fortunately, neither was hurt. Gibson saying the suspect left a note reading, “no data centers.” He recently backed a rezoning plan that would allow a data center to be built in his district.” A video clip from the broadcast appeared on Instagram, captioned, “The FBI is now investigating what authorities are calling a targeted shooting at the home of Indianapolis councilman Ron Gibson. The suspect left a note that read, “No data centers,” after Gibson backed a plan to build a data center in his district. @davidmuirabc reports.”

Viewers flocked to the comments section, with reactions ranging widely. “The people have had enough,” one ABC viewer remarked.

Another wrote, “Perhaps elected officials need to start listening to the constituents instead of just going with the flow and what will pad their pockets financially.” Others, though, expressed support for the councilman, reports The Mirror US.

“Political violence won’t be tolerated; thankfully, no one has been hurt!” one concerned viewer stated. Another emphasized, “Violence is not the answer!”

A fifth individual observed, “This is unacceptable. Data centers are also unacceptable,” while someone else added, “So glad they are both ok!”

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to Gibson’s residence at roughly 9 a.m. on Monday following reports of gunfire. Authorities confirmed no injuries occurred and characterized it as an “isolated, targeted incident.”

Speaking to FOX59 News on Monday, Gibson revealed the shooting occurred overnight at approximately 12.45 a.m. He estimated that 13 rounds were fired into his residence. Gibson revealed: “Just steps from where those bullets struck is our dining room table, where my son had been playing with his Legos the day before,” adding, “That reality is deeply unsettling. This was not just an attack on my home, but endangered my child and disrupted the safety of our entire neighborhood.”

Gibson has cast votes in favor of constructing a data center, though the proposal has encountered significant community opposition. Multiple public hearings have taken place, with local residents calling on the city to turn down the application.
