As tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to boil, delegates from the U.S. and Iran faced each other during an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council.
During the meeting, the Associated Press reported that the American envoy renewed threats against the Islamic Republic despite President Donald Trump’s efforts to de-escalate the tensions. The envoy was joined by dissidents from Iran in rebuking the government’s bloody crackdown on nationwide protests that activists say have killed at least 2,677 people.
“Colleagues, let me be clear: President Trump is a man of action, not endless talk like we see at the United Nations,” Mike Waltz, the U.S. Ambassador, said to the assembled council. “He has made it clear that all options are on the table to stop the slaughter. And no one should know that better than the leadership of the Iranian regime.”
The remarks made Waltz come as U.S. retaliation for the protesters who were killed by the current regime. It was reported that, as of Thursday, the protests had been largely stamped out, but the state-ordered internet and communication blackout remained in place.
One diplomat reported to the AP that top officials from Egypt, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar spent the last 48 hours raising warnings that President Donald Trump could insert the U.S. military into Iran and destabilize the global economy.

It was also reported that, during the meeting, Hossein Darzi, the deputy Iranian ambassador to the U.N., slammed the U.S. for “direct involvement in steering unrest in Iran to violence.” The deputy ambassador stated, “Under the hollow pretext of concern for the Iranian people and claims of support for human rights, the United States is attempting to portray itself as a friend of the Iranian people, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for political destabilization and military intervention under a so-called ′humanitarian′ narrative.”
Also during the meeting, two Iranian dissidents, Masih Alinejad and Ahmad Batebi, were allowed to speak about their lives on the run from a vengeful regime. “You have tried to kill me three times,” Alinejad said.
“I have seen my would-be assassin with my own eyes in front of my garden, in my home in Brooklyn,” she added while the Iranian official seemingly ignored her. Batebi described the deep cuts the prison guards in Iran would inflict on him before pouring salt on his wounds.
“If you do not believe me, I can show you my body right now,” he told the council before pleading for U.S. assistance. “You encouraged people to go into the streets. That was a good thing. But don’t leave them alone.”

More firepower
Trump’s call for de-escalation comes after he revealed that the reason behind the cancellation of the bombing of Iran was reportedly due to a lack of firepower. According to reports, the president was advised that a large-scale strike against Iran would allegedly not make much of an impact and could, possibly, ignite a more bloody conflict.
Since the cancellation of the bombing, U.S. officials are monitoring how Tehran will handle the protests before deciding the necessary scope of the attack. Reports from the Wall Street Journal state that officials with U.S. Government and Middle Eastern partners warned the White House that the current regime was unlikely to fall after a massive bombing campaign.
Instead, American forces would need to call upon allies such as Israel should Iran choose to retaliate. Trump, who has yet to make an official decision on the matter, reportedly asked for military assets to be in place should he order a big attack, an official told The Wall Street Journal.
