CBS News recently announced a number of layoffs due to the closing of one of its divisions. This was just one in a series of changes occurring at the network over the past few months. Recently, it was announced that one beloved figure, known for working with a number of CBS programs, will be leaving.
News Came Out Friday That CBS Would Be Cutting Down Its Workforce
This past Friday, CBS News revealed that it’s slashing six percent of its workforce. Notably, CBS Radio is shutting down entirely, bringing the division’s 100-year run to its end.
Around 60 to 70 jobs will be cut, though it’s believed that some figures will simply be sent to other positions at the network. Meanwhile, new talent is also expected to join CBS News.

According to The New York Post, one figure affected by the cuts is Elaine Quijano. Based in New York City, Quijano joined CBS News in early 2010 as a general assignment reporter.
Quijano served as an anchor for the Sunday edition of CBS Weekend News from 2016 to 2020. She has also worked with CBS This Morning and CBS Evening News. In addition, she is also an anchor for CBSN, CBS’ digital streaming network. Prior to this, she was also known for working with CNN, serving as a correspondent for CNN Newsource in late 2000.
The News Was Shared With Staff In A Memo From Bari Weiss & Tom Cibrowski
The outlet also listed other figures who have also been impacted by the cuts. These include “Dallas-based correspondent Omar Villafranca; Los Angeles-based correspondent Nidia Cavazos; Las Vegas-based correspondent Andres Gutierrez; national correspondent Dave Malkoff; and Karen Hua, a national reporter in Houston.” In addition, Washington, DC-based reporter Nick Kurtz and political reporter Hunter Woodall also announced that they were let go on social media.
The outlet also noted that more layoffs are expected to happen in the near future. It was mentioned that Bill Whitaker of 60 Minutes is also expected to retire at the end of the season.
As previously reported, CBS News has seen a number of changes since the recent installation of Bari Weiss as editor-in-chief. Weiss and CBS News president Tom Cibrowski recently shared the news in a memo to staff. It read, “Today we are reducing the size of our workforce, and employees who are affected will be notified by the end of the day.” Expressing sympathy toward those who were leaving, it continued, “These aren’t just names on a list. They are talented, committed colleagues who have been critical to our success.”
What is your reaction to this recent development? Did you watch Elaine Quijano on her CBS programs? Have you been following this story?
