Vanna White may still be turning letters on “Wheel of Fortune,” but she almost left television behind.
The network television staple, 68, told E! News that when longtime “Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajak retired in 2024, she almost went with him. The show is now hosted by Ryan Seacrest.
“When Pat decided he was going to retire, I had to make a decision,” White told the outlet. “Working with someone for that long, I feel like I should maybe go with him.” The star ultimately decided, though, that she wasn’t quite ready for her next act.
“I thought hard and thought, ‘You know what? I’m just not ready to retire yet. I’m having fun. I feel good. I feel healthy,'” she said. “So, at this point, it’s one year at a time. … I don’t think there’s anything else on TV I would rather do after being on ‘Wheel’ for so long. Honestly, I think I wanna just play golf when I retire.”
Sajak, who hosted the show for over 40 seasons, passed the baton to Seacrest in September 2024 but continued hosting spin-off “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” through June. A television fixture for decades before his role at “Wheel,” Seacrest has blended in seamlessly on set, White told E!
“We get along great,” she said. “I think our chemistry is good. He’s such a nice guy, and he’s so professional and hardworking and we just gel. This is our second year together, and I feel like it’s been forever.”
“We do have some background friendship,” added White, who’s known Seacrest for over 20 years. “It all worked out just perfect.”
In October, Seacrest told USA TODAY that he and White have great chemistry and have even developed an elaborate secret handshake ritual before each show. They also take a moment backstage for a mutual final makeup check.
