One lucky skier has survived a vicious snow leopard attack in China.
The incident, which occurred near the Keketuohai International Ski Resort in the Altai Mountains, could have been fatal. Fortunately, the woman in question was able to walk away, albeit with blood streaming down her face.
A viral video shows the dangerous animal standing over the skier’s body, but she escaped after others intervened.
Per Adventure Magazine, local authorities in Fuyun County say the skier ignored warning signs posted in the area urging people to steer clear of wildlife. They believe she approached the creature to take a selfie. According to onlookers, the leopard did not immediately attack, although it was clearly agitated, and waited about 10 minutes before finally snapping.

Snow Leopard Sightings Increased Before Near-Fatal Attack

Authorities also noted that snow leopards had been seen in the area more frequently over recent weeks. They even increased patrols as a result.
The skier was wearing a helmet, which is probably why she did not suffer life-threatening head injuries. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.
Snow leopards don’t randomly attack or kill, but they are extremely dangerous. They rarely encounter humans, and most times they do, it’s because their space has been entered.
In this particular case, the skier was at a protected UNESCO park. Keketuohai is not a fenced ski resort, so wildlife is free to move around. It’s why signs are posted, warning visitors of potential sightings and telling them to keep away.
While snow leopards can cover large distances in mere seconds, they typically don’t attack people who don’t bother them.
