Stephen Colbert opened up about The Late Show ending in May 2026 during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, saying the conclusion now ‘feels real’ after 10 years on air
Stephen Colbert tells Donald Trump to go ‘f*** himself’
Stephen Colbert has admitted his Late Show cancellation is starting to “feel real” as the end approaches.
The 61-year-old talk show host opened up about wrapping up his 10-year run on the program, with the final episode scheduled to air in May.
During an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he confided to his friend, “It feels real now.
“It did not feel… I mean, I know it was real, but now, there’s four months left.”
Reports from LateNighter and Deadline indicate the final episode of The Late Show will broadcast on May 21.

Colbert emphasized that “the people I do it with” have made his tenure so memorable and rewarding.
Speaking about the legendary New York City venue where the show is recorded, he remarked: “Listen, you can do comedy in a lot of different places, [but] there’s no place like the Ed Sullivan Theater.
“But it’s really the people. That’s really what I care about. That’s really what I’m going to miss more than anything.”

Colbert announced the show’s conclusion back in July, delivering the heartbreaking news to his audience.
He revealed in his monologue at the time: “Before we start the show, I want you to know something that I found out just last night. “Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending The Late Show in May….
“It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
The announcement came on the heels of his criticism of parent company Paramount’s $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump, at a time when the studio was awaiting approval for its merger with Skydance. CBS maintained that the decision to cancel the show was “purely financial” and unrelated to “other matters happening at Paramount”, but many speculated otherwise.
However, Colbert himself has declined to “engage in that speculation”. In an interview with GQ magazine, he confessed to having “feelings” about The Late Show’s conclusion but chose not to discuss them publicly as the program won’t end until May 2026.
He further stated: “People can have their theories. I have my feelings about not doing the show anymore, but you’d have to show me why that’s a fruitful relationship for me to have with my network for the next nine months, for me to engage in that speculation.”
