With David Muir once again absent from the broadcast, ABC World News Tonight audiences appeared less than cheerful, and a tragic report certainly didn’t help matters.
The 52-year-old veteran news presenter seems to be enjoying a holiday break, leaving Whit Johnson to deliver the latest headlines and updates to viewers.
But as expected, Whit had some troubling developments to share, telling the audience, “Tonight, a swimmer who witnesses say was attacked by a shark is missing off the coast of Monterey, California, the 55-year-old woman last seen Sunday afternoon.”

He wrapped up his portion of the coverage, transitioning to his coworker by saying, “Here’s ABC News. Melissa Adan with the latest on the search efforts,” who was broadcasting from Los Angeles.
“Tonight, a woman still missing off the central California coast after a possible shark attack, setting off in urgent search,” Melissa opened her segment, reports the Mirror US.
“The first calls coming in around noon on Sunday. According to Pacific Grove police, a group was in the area near Monterey for a weekly swim, but one of the swimmers never returned to shore.”
Melissa continued, “There was a large splash that was seen by a witness up here on the shoreline, and from that, all the other swimmers came in because they thought maybe it was possibly a shark attack.
“The US Coast Guard telling ABC News, ‘at least one witness reported seeing a shark with a person in its mouth before it went back under water.’ But they are still investigating. Police say the missing swimmer is reported to be a 55-year-old blonde woman with blue eyes,” she added.

Melissa wrapped up by speaking with Whit in the studio, “Whit, late today, the Coast Guard suspended its search for that swimmer who remains missing. This as several beaches along California Central Coast will be closed through tomorrow.”
The breaking news update was posted to ABC World News Tonight’s Instagram page alongside the caption, “The USCG says it suspended its search for a missing woman who may have been attacked by a shark near Monterey, California.
“The USCG told ABC News a witness reported seeing a shark with a person in its mouth before it went back underwater. Melissa Adan reports.”
Viewers quickly reacted to the disturbing report, with one person writing, “Oh my God. I hate that this happened, but 100 yards [in an] area known for sharks,.
“I pray for her and her loved ones.”
“Woah crazy, just like that she is gone,” a second viewer observed, with another commenting, “Jesus Christ … if THAT doesn’t sound like Jaws,” referencing the legendary 1975 thriller film.
