Hoda Kotb Returns To Today For Devastating Reason
Today Show fans were upset when Hoda Kotb left the morning program in January 2025. After spending decades co-hosting the NBC talk show, she wanted to spend more time with her kids. She shares two children, Haley and Hope, with her former fiance, Joel Schiffman. Their youngest daughter, Hope, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.
Hoda Kotb has returned to the show several times, usually as a guest. But she stepped in for Savannah Guthrie amid the ongoing search for Savannah’s elderly mother. Nancy Guthrie, 84, mysteriously disappeared at the end of January. The police have very few leads about her presumed kidnapping.
The Today Show prides itself on being like family. Many of the hosts remain close friends, even after departing from the show. Hoda Kotb remains close with Jenna Bush Hager, Savannah Guthrie, and many others she used to work with. However, her strongest bond might be with Kathie Lee Gifford.
Talk Show Host Reveals How Hoda Helped Through Heartbreaking Loss
The two co-hosted the Today Show‘s fourth hour for over a decade. Kathie Lee Gifford left in 2019 and was replaced by Jenna Bush Hager. Sheinelle Jones became co-host after Hoda Kotb left last year. Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda reunited for a new edition of Hoda’s Making Space podcast.
Kathie Lee Gifford vulnerably opened up about the heartbreaking loss of her husband. NFL legend Frank Gifford passed away unexpectedly in 2015. His death was on Hoda Kotb’s birthday. Kathie Lee Gifford recounted how she was hesitant to inform Hoda of her husband’s death because she knew her friend would rush to her side.
That’s exactly what happened. “I remember walking into your backyard and I saw the back of you. And I just was standing there … and you turned around and you go, ‘I’m glad you came,’” Hoda Kotb recalled.
Kathie Lee Gifford emotionally addressed her husband’s death on the morning program. Hoda Kotb said on the podcast that it was one of the most memorable moments from the Today Show.
“I don’t know that there was anything that we did on our entire show that was more impactful than that day. That day touched people who were going through incredible tragedy,” Hoda Kotb said. The former co-hosts lightened the moment by sharing a hilarious story about getting kicked off the plaza where the show films.
Sadly, another Today host recently experienced the loss of their husband. Sheinelle Jones’ husband, Uche Ojeh, passed away in 2025 after a battle with brain cancer. If the worst scenario possible comes true about Savannah Guthrie’s mother, her Today co-hosts will be there to comfort her as Hoda did after the death of Kathie Lee Gifford’s husband.
