Stephen Colbert discussed ICE agents’ scarce training for new recruits during the January 15 episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Stephen Colbert has once again slammed ICE but this time took aim at the federal law enforcement agency’s training failures in his brutal monologue.
During the Thursday, January 15, episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the 61-year-old host discussed ICE agents’ scarce training for new recruits, joking that it takes longer to complete a beginner’s training for knot makers than to complete ICE’s beginner’s regime.
The late-night host, who recently slammed President Donald Trump after the tragic ICE shooting in Minneapolis, also hit out at ICE’s failed use of AI in screening its applicants. The AI tool was reportedly passing applicants along the training process, despite them needing to enter through the beginner’s regime.
Colbert said in his monologue, citing NBC News, “Apparently, there are two different training tracks for ICE applicants. There are recruits who are already law enforcement officers [only need] four weeks of… training. But applicants without law enforcement backgrounds are required to take an eight-week course.”
“So, it’s a maximum of eight weeks? I feel like it should take longer to become an unaccountable, armed member of a secret police than it does to take classic chain making for absolute beginners at the 92nd Street Y. That’s 12 weeks. 12 weeks to make the fisherman’s knot.”

The late-night host continued, “Apparently, the application screening process hit a little snag when the AI tool that ICE was using to screen applicants sent people with the word ‘officer’ on their resumes to the shorter training regime, including those who had been a compliance officer or people who said they aspired to be ICE officers.”
Colbert concluded by joking, “And most common of all, those who said, ‘I’ll have to double check with my parole officer.'”
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s Instagram shared a clip of the moment when the host dropped the jokes and captioned it with, “With great power comes greatly lacking training, apparently.”
In the comments section of the post, several applauded Colbert for his views and brutal jokes, with one person writing, “They all just make me want to. Yet again, another superb view from Mr. Stephen Colbert!”
Another added, “You and your team are doing The Work. Thank you for bringing it. We need it. We value it. Please march on. We need you now more than ever.”

A third pointed out, “No disrespect, but the jokes almost writes itself. What an embarrassment America has become,” as a fourth penned, “You are so right about something so wrong.”
However, added, “The trouble is it is just not funny any more,” as another echoed, “No longer a funny topic.”
Colbert recently weighed in on the fatal shooting of Renee Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis last week, slamming President Donald Trump‘s role in the escalating violence amid the mass deportation efforts.
The violent incident, during which the 37-year-old was killed, has led to protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers in Minneapolis after the Department of Homeland Security called the shooting self-defense.
Colbert discussed the ongoing turmoil in Minnesota with political commentator Chris Hayes. The Emmy-winner slammed the president for his role in the shocking killing, which Minnesota Governor Tim Walz says could have been prevented.
“In a press conference, Governor Walz pointed out that this was predictable,” Colbert began. “That someone was going to get killed from this use of excessive force in American cities for reasons that are extremely dubious by the Trump administration.”
The host continued, “He said, ‘We do not need any help from the federal government,’ and called in the Minnesota National Guard. When was the last time a U.S. state had to protect itself from the federal government?” Hayes added, “This has been one of the grimmest realities of the entire year.”
The 46-year-old went on to explain, “The president of the United States clearly views himself not as the president of the entire nation,” but rather that he “views himself as the President of the country of MAGA. And he views any municipality, locality, state, or territory that is not within his political coalition as essentially an enemy.”
Colbert agreed, noting the recent $10 billion cuts in federal aid to multiple blue states by the Trump administration.
