The family of former Today Show host Bryant Gumbel have finally spoken out after the broadcasting legend was rushed to hospital following a sudden medical emergency at his Manhattan apartment.
Gumbel, now 77, was taken for treatment late on Monday night, with the exact circumstances surrounding the scare still being kept under wraps.
However, a family member told TMZ that he is currently “okay”, while confirming he remains under medical care.
The former broadcaster famously hosted Today from 1982 to 1997, starring alongside Jane Pauley and Matt Lauer, becoming one of the most recognisable faces on American morning television.
This latest emergency comes years after Gumbel bravely opened up about his battle with lung cancer in 2009.
A former heavy smoker, Bryant once admitted he used to get through three packs a day before finally quitting.
Speaking candidly on Live! With Regis and Kelly, he described the terrifying moment surgeons opened his chest.
“They took a malignant tumor, part of my lung and some other goodies,” he recalled.
“Most of the pathology was benign, but enough aggressive cells had escaped that it warranted treatment — and I went through that.”
Thankfully, he later confirmed the treatment was successful.
Gumbel went on to front Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel from 1995 until his retirement in 2023, bringing an end to a remarkable 29-season run.
Off camera, he has been supported by his devoted wife Hilary, a former Goldman Sachs employee and associate producer on Real Sports. The couple have been married since 2002.
The health scare also comes just months after a heartbreaking family loss.
Bryant’s brother, legendary sportscaster Greg Gumbel, died in December 2024 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Greg’s career spanned more than five decades, covering everything from the Super Bowl to the Olympic Games.
His family said he fought his illness with “stoicism, grace and positivity,” while CBS paid tribute, calling him “the finest gentleman in all of television.”
As Bryant continues to receive treatment, fans across the world are holding their breath — hoping that this latest scare will not mark another painful chapter for the iconic Gumbel family.
