CNN shared a major Nancy Guthrie update before law enforcement involved in her case released a photo of a subject.

The network shared that the FBI will soon reveal a new image taken from a camera at Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother’s home showing a person who appears to be wearing a mask and carrying a backpack or tools. NBC News first reported the update, citing a source close to the investigation.

The person is considered a “subject” in the investigation, NBC said, and the FBI hopes that the public can help gather more information about this individual as the case to find the mother of the Today Show host, 54, heats up. Before CNN knew the update was an image, Jake Tapper said it could be the “first glimmer of hope.” It comes after an expert revealed a chilling truth that the kidnapper is “known to the family.”

CNN’s Dana Bash called the coming update a “big break” in the search for Nancy, who has been missing since February 1.  Minutes later, CNN shared the photos of a masked person carrying a backpack. “It does appear to be a gun,” Tom Winter, NBC news correspondent, said on NBC.

Bash spoke to a law enforcement expert, who said that the pictures were better than they thought. Tapper added that the FBI told him these are just the first photos they’ll release. “This could be a break in the case,’ Tapper said.

The pictures of the subject were released on FBI Director Kash Patel’s X account.

He wrote, “Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors – including the removal of recording devices.

“The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems. Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.

“Anyone with information, please contact 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit http://tips.fbi.gov.”

Later, CNN received a video from which the images came, showing the subject walking up to the Nest camera and finding something in the front yard to cover it. Tapper observed that the subject looked unprepared for the camera.

This comes after Savannah released another video urging potential suspects to release her mother.

She said in a new video, “We believe our mom is still out there.”

On Saturday, February 7, the seventh day of Nancy’s disappearance, the TV host and her siblings released their second video in which they directly addressed their mother’s potential kidnappers and urgently pleaded, “We will pay.”

The letter demanded millions of dollars in bitcoin for Nancy’s return, but KOLD said it received a second, shorter, message on Friday, February 6.

The first note had two deadlines — one that has since passed and one for Monday, an official said (per CNN). The second included sensitive information but no deadline, according to KOLD anchor Mary Coleman.

In the first video, shared on Wednesday, February 4, Savannah said they “need to know without a doubt that she’s alive and that you have her.” She also noted that her mother is in “constant pain” and needs her medication to survive.

Law enforcement officials investigating Nancy’s disappearance have also obtained surveillance footage from a local convenience store that may show a vehicle connected to the case.
