Savannah Guthrie said “it is good to be home” as she made her return to TODAY on April 6 in her first appearance on the show since the disappearance of her mother.
“Good morning, welcome to TODAY on this Monday morning,” Savannah said at the start of the show. “We are so glad you started your week with us, and it is good to be home.”
“Yes, it is good to have you back at home,” Craig Melvin said.
“Well here we go, ready or not, let’s do the news,” Savannah said.
“So good to have you back,” Craig added.
Savannah rejoined Craig for her first day back as co-anchor since Jan. 30, which was one day before her mother, Nancy Guthrie, was last seen at her home outside Tucson, Arizona.
The dress Savannah is wearing on her first day back is yellow, which has become a symbol of hope in Arizona and support for the Guthrie family from those praying for Nancy Guthrie’s return.
Savannah also drew a loud cheer from TODAY fans on Rockefeller Plaza in the second hour of the show when she appeared holding hands with Jenna Bush Hager as they joined Craig, Sheinelle Jones, Al Roker and Carson Daly. Several fans were holding signs showing support for her, and one woman had on a shirt that read, “Welcome Home Savannah.”
“These signs are so beautiful,” Savannah told the crowd while holding back tears. “You guys have been so beautiful. I’ve received so many letters, so much kindness to me and my whole family. We feel it. We feel your prayers, so thank you so much.”
A day earlier, Savannah delivered a heartfelt video message of hope on Easter for Good Shepherd New York church.
“I see a bright vision of the day when heaven and Earth pass away because they are one, on Earth as it is in heaven,” Savannah said at the end of her message. “When we celebrate today, this is what we celebrate, and I celebrate, too. I still believe. And so I say with conviction, ‘Happy Easter.’”
Her remarks on TODAY came amid the 10th week since Nancy Guthrie went missing. The 84-year-old was last seen on Jan 31, and authorities have said they believe she was taken from her home against her will.
On Feb. 10, the FBI released photos of a masked and armed person outside of Nancy’s home the night she disappeared. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos later said authorities are working to identify mixed DNA found at Nancy’s property.
Savannah sat for her first interview since her mother’s disappearance with Hoda Kotb. In their conversation, which aired on TODAY March 26 and 27, Savannah spoke about learning her mom went missing and what led her to return to TODAY.
“I can’t come back and try to be something that I’m not,” she said about her return to TODAY. “But I can’t not come back because it’s my family. I don’t know if I can do it. I don’t know if I’ll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try.”
She also spoke to Hoda about leaning on her faith and her family.
“One of the very few times in my life, I did hear God speak to me,” Savannah said.
“I heard a voice, and it said, ‘You do know where she is. She’s with me. She’s with me,’” she added. “So whether she is on this Earth still or whether she is in heaven, I know where she is. I know who she’s with. But we need to know.”
Savannah first mentioned that she planned to return to TODAY on March 6 in an emotional visit to Studio 1A in Rockefeller Center to see the TODAY family.
“I have every intention of coming back,” she told her colleagues. “I don’t know how to come back, but I don’t know how not to. You’re my family. And I would like to try.”
