Late last month, Sam Champion underwent emergency heart surgery.
He returned to the show on March 25, opening up about the procedure during his first show back.
Appearing alongside co-hosts Michael Strahan, Robin Roberts, and Lara Spencer, he explained what led him to getting the urgent procedure and updated fans on how he was doing at the time.
“It’s weird to say. I’m sitting here, I feel fine, and there’s just that little mark right there, but I did have an emergency procedure,” the meteorologist shared, pointing to a small scar on his wrist.
“It was one hour, and one hour later I feel fine, immediately,” he added, before sharing a photo of himself waving from a hospital bed after surgery.

He thanked his medical team at Mount Sinai Medical Center for caring for him.
“I’m healthy. My heart presents as healthy. When I was tested over and over again, everything looked fine,” Sam told viewers.
“There was one symptom that kept persisting. I didn’t know it could mean a heart attack until I had a nuclear stress test to see what was going on inside my heart, to see how my heart was moving and holding blood.
“Noticing I was a little out of breath was the one thing that was wrong with me. I’m 64 years old. My doctors said, ‘We need to do this test right away.’”
A month earlier, Lara returned to work after suffering a major family loss.
Her mother died after a battle with cancer.
Prior to her return to the show, Lara opened up to her social media followers about her grief and thanked them for their support.
“Finally coming out of the fog of grief and so grateful to my GMA family-making me feel warm and loved-even in 42 degrees temps in Florida,” she said online.
“No one I would rather be stranded with than this guy. We huddled around the heat lamp, collaborated one making the show as fun and energetic as possible, and even took a page from Punch the money’s book-giving our [monkey] stuffie a squeeze when needed.
