Donald Trump has spoken out about the news that Today co-host Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy, 84, has been seemingly abducted from her home, according to local officials.
“I’m going to call her later on,” he said of Guthrie. “I think it’s a terrible thing. I always got along very good with Savannah.” During a February 3 press conference in the Oval Office, when the president was questioned on the topic, he declared, “Very unusual situation, but we’re gonna find out.”
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has been leading the investigation with assistance from federal authorities. Officials confirmed the FBI is providing support as detectives work to determine what happened in the early hours surrounding her disappearance.
According to police, several of Nancy’s personal belongings were found at the home, including her phone, wallet, vehicle, and smartwatch. Investigators also noted evidence at the residence that suggested a struggle may have occurred.
While authorities reported that Nancy was abducted after forced entry, they have publicly stated that theft does not appear to be the primary motive. Detectives continue to assess all possibilities as they review evidence and follow up on tips.
They are also investigating a ransom note reported by TMZ, and the police department posted on X that it is “aware of reports circulating about possible ransom note(s) regarding the investigation into Nancy Guthrie.”
The statement comes as Guthrie’s daughter, Savannah, and law enforcement continue searching for answers about what happened to her mother.
Most recently, TMZ reported that they had received an alleged ransom note demanding payment for Guthrie’s release. According to the outlet, the note was sent Tuesday morning and claims Guthrie is being held by an abductor seeking an enormous payout.
Despite the circulating reports, police have remained vague about the alleged ransom note and have not confirmed its authenticity or contents. Investigators have continued to focus publicly on the circumstances surrounding Guthrie’s disappearance.
Authorities say they believe Guthrie was forcefully taken from her home in what they described as a “possible kidnapping or abduction” the night before her family reported her missing from her Arizona property.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen on the night of January 31 at her Tucson home. She was reported missing by her family around noon on February 1, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at a news conference the following day.
“We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” NBC Nightly News reported.
Sheriff Nanos provided another update during a press conference on Tuesday, February 3. He said DNA samples collected from Guthrie’s home, which he described as an active crime scene, have not led investigators to a suspect.
“The scene is done,” he said. “We’re done with the residence. We don’t know where she is. We are following all leads we have, that’s all I can tell you. We’ve gotten hundreds of leads.”
A $2,500 reward is being offered by 88-CRIME for information leading to the arrest of those involved in the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.
Confidential tips can be submitted, with rewards often capped at $2,500 for significant information. For high-profile cases like Guthrie’s, a maximum reward of $2,500 has been specifically promoted.
