On Monday, March 2, ABC viewers were left without a new episode of World News Tonight with David Muir, as the United States and allied forces are actively engaged in military operations involving Iran.

The disappearance of Muir comes as Iran and Iranian-backed forces have fired missiles at regional targets and U.S. installations in response to joint U.S.-Israeli strikes. Just one day after the World News Tonight anchor delivered a primetime special on Sunday night titled Shockwaves: The Attack on Iran, the newscaster did not appear on ABC’s regular evening broadcast.

Muir’s unexpected Sunday special titled Shockwaves: The Attack on Iran aired on March 1, at 9:00 p.m. EST on ABC, and is now available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu. The hour-long special focused on the recent surprise military attacks on Iran that have drawn the United States into direct conflict alongside Israeli forces. Muir spoke about the events leading up to the operation, including the decision by Donald Trump to launch military action.

The special also included live reporting from correspondents around the world, with coverage from Washington, Tel Aviv, Istanbul, Doha, and Amman. Segments detailed the sequence of attacks against key Iranian targets and reactions from U.S. lawmakers.

Muir also revisited his past reporting from the region and spoke about the aspirations of young Iranians he met during previous trips.

The absence of Muir from Monday’s broadcast came amid ongoing combat operations that began late last week.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes on Iran, a campaign that followed years of rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program and regional military activity.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in the initial phase of the strikes, a development confirmed by Iranian state media on March 1.

Since the offensive began, Iran and Iranian allied groups have retaliated with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel, U.S. military bases across the Gulf, and other regional partners.

At least six U.S. service members were killed in the fighting, and more were reportedly left wounded, according to the U.S. Central Command.

President Trump described the operation as “major combat operations” and acknowledged that there could be further U.S. casualties as the conflict unfolds. Meanwhile, Iran’s leadership has pushed back, with its military actions providing defensive responses to U.S. and Israeli assaults.

The hostilities have also disrupted global energy markets and heightened geopolitical tensions. Oil prices have spiked, and financial markets reacted sharply as investors weighed the implications of prolonged conflict.

Most recently, Trump said that the war could last between four and five weeks, but has the possibility of “lasting much longer.”
