Cher made a multitude of blunders at the 2026 Grammy Awards as she took to the stage to accept her Grammys Lifetime Achievement Award.
Cher was honored with a lifetime achievement award at the 2026 Grammy Awards on Sunday night, but it was a multitude of blunders that really grabbed viewers’ attention.
After delivering a heartfelt speech, the 79-year-old icon went to walk off stage before host Trevor Noah told her she needed to return to announce the Grammy winner for record of the year.
Things continued to go wrong as Cher then went to share who had won, but was left confused as she didn’t realise the winner wouldn’t be on the teleprompter.
She mistakenly announced that the winner was Luther Vandross, the late R&B legend who died in 2005.
The actual award went to “Luther,” a track by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, which Cher then correctly announced.
The track appears on Lamar’s 2024 album “GNX” and is known for Vandross’ vocals sample.
Cher then laughed as she handed off the trophy.
“This is what music is about. Luther Vandross … ” Lamar went on to joke, accepting the award, and drawing laughter from the audience.
“This is special for me. I gotta take my time. It’s one of my favorite artists of all-time. They granted us the privilege to do our version of it. When we got that clearance, I promise you, we damn near all dropped a tear.”
Lamar entered the night with a leading nine nominations, including Album of the Year and Best Rap Album for GNX.

In addition to Record of the Year, he earned nods for Song of the Year and Best Melodic Rap Performance for “Luther,” Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “30 for 30” with SZA, Best Rap Performance for both “Chains and Whips” with Clipse and Pharrell Williams and “TV Off” with Lefty Gunplay, and Best Rap Song for “TV Off.”
SZA also picked up an individual nomination for Best Traditional R&B Performance for “Crybaby.”
Lady Gaga, 39, followed closely with seven nominations.
