An NBC News correspondent shares how the newly released video could be used to determine the identity of the potential suspect in Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance.
On the Tuesday (February 10) episode of the network’s Nightly News with Tom Llamas, the host said they had their team break down the newly released surveillance footage that shows a potential suspect in Nancy’s kidnapping. The FBI released footage of a masked and armed individual outside the 84-year-old’s home. The federal agency’s director Kash Patel said that the individual appeared “to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”
The video and footage showed that the masked person was wearing a zipped-up jacket, pants, and light running shoes. They also had on a “fully stuffed” backpack with no logo and reflectors. During the evening program, NBC News Law Enforcement Correspondent Tom Winter was part of the team reviewing the footage. He had noted how the clothing could be the key for investigators. It comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.
“Investigators can also dig in on all the clothing we’ve seen from past cases, where they looked to all the major retailers, pulled receipts, and then pulled the video from the store to see who bought that backpack or pull the email and IP address of the online purchaser and find out who the person is,” Winter explained.

The correspondent also noted that investigators will also look at the subject’s type of gun, why the gun was “out and accessible”, and what’s in the backpack. Winter also mentioned how the video makes it clear which direction the individual approaches from, so the FBI could check out other videos from that area.
Before Tuesday, authorities stated they were unable to retrieve the footage. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said in a news conference last week that the footage was not available and that the camera software company had “run out of ways to recover” the video.
Patel explained that the latest video was recovered “from residual data located in backend systems” in his statement on X, formerly Twitter. He also shared that the FBI and the sheriff’s department have been working closely with their “private sector partners” to continue recovering any images or video footage from Nancy’s home that “may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible.”

The decision to release the footage to the public came after the Guthrie family and law enforcement didn’t recognize the individual, per NBC. The FBI is hoping the public might be able to recognize the figure, their clothing or the items seen in the footage.
Savannah Guthrie, Nancy’s daughter, posted the surveillance images on Instagram on Tuesday, February 9. The TODAY show anchor captioned the post with, “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.”
Nancy was last seen on January 31st after being dropped off from a family dinner and was reported missing on February 1 by her family after not attending Sunday service.
