Rob and Michele Reiner lost their lives after permitting their son, Nick Reiner, 32, to reside in their home.

Following the couple’s deaths, which authorities treated as homicides, Nick was taken into custody as the suspected perpetrator. Officials alleged he killed his parents while they slept before leaving the property. He entered a not guilty plea to the charges, and the screenwriter remains behind bars.

Prior to the tragedy, Nick had publicly acknowledged his battles with substance abuse and mental health challenges. His mental health condition raised red flags among medical professionals, who expressed concerns regarding his medication regimen.

“The medical staff warned Rob and Michele not to let Nick live at home until he got his medication straightened out,” a source told Us Weekly. Another insider revealed that Nick’s parents were trying to help him regulate his prescriptions, but “they weren’t working anymore,” reports the Irish Star.

Nick had allegedly dismissed his fired and altered his medications just before his parents’ murders.

However, changing medications proved complicated and, a source indicated, doctors cautioned them “not to allow Nick to stay at their home due to the meds being switched, and [said] that it could make him exhibit even more erratic behavior.”

Rob and Michele were fatally stabbed on December 14 after attending Conan O’Brien’s holiday party with Nick. Rob and Nick were reportedly involved in an intense confrontation.

Nick’s sister, Romy, discovered her parents’ bodies before calling 9-1-1. Law enforcement launched a search for Nick, who was apprehended later that evening.

He faced two counts of first-degree murder, with special circumstances citing multiple murders and the use of a knife. Nick didn’t immediately enter a plea with the courts as he had difficulty attending initial hearings due to medical clearance problems.

Eventually, though, he entered a not guilty plea in a hearing earlier this year and was reportedly removed from suicide watch.

Furthermore, Nick’s siblings reportedly chose not to finance Nick’s legal expenses. “Last I heard, the family has not been in communication with Nick,” a source said.

“They just cannot handle that at the moment.”

Nick reportedly battles schizophrenia and addiction. He collaborated with his father on a 2015 film called “Becoming Charlie,” which drew from their family’s experiences with the condition.
