Viewers have seen Al Roker report the weather for decades as part of his prolific career. Naturally, this leaves many wondering when this time will come to an end. Recently, Roker discussed his own retirement during an interview, but what did he have to say? Keep reading for all of the details on his future.
Al Roker Recently Celebrated His 30th Anniversary With Today
Originally from Queens, Roker started his career at a CBS affiliate in Syracuse, New York. In 1978, he began his career with NBC when he started working with WKYC in Cleveland.
In 1987, Roker also started working as a substitute on NBC News at Sunrise. He took on his full-time role at Today in 1996, taking over for Willard Scott, receiving the regular weekday weather slot. With a prolific career as a meteorologist, he celebrated his 30th anniversary with Today in 2026.

When it comes to retirement, Roker explained that, for the time being, this wouldn’t be his decision. For starters, he shared how much he loved his job with Today. While speaking with People Magazine, he explained, “Let’s put it this way: I haven’t thought about retirement.”
However, Roker noted, “Somebody at NBC, that might be a different story.” In other words, Roker’s plan is to stay with the show as long as they’ll have him.
Roker Also Touched On The Legacy He Hopes To Leave Behind
Looking back, Roker noted how much he loved working on the show, adding, “I love what I do. I feel good. I love this job. I love doing it.”
Of course, Roker knows that leaving Today is ultimately inevitable. As he continued, “At some point I guess I won’t be, but I don’t feel like that’s anytime soon, so I’m just gonna keep going.” He even admitted, “To say that this was a dream job isn’t really accurate because it never dawned on me that I could be on the Today show.”
That said, only time will tell what will happen to Roker. Perhaps, when he does eventually retire, he’ll pursue other projects or even other shows. That said, his plan is to stay with Today for the time being.
However, there is one thing Roker was a bit more sure about. He also touched on what kind of legacy he wants to leave behind. As the outlet noted, the anchor shared that he doesn’t want viewers to “feel like I wasted their time. Ultimately, he hoped, “They felt better after watching than before.”
Have you been following this story? What is your reaction to Al Roker’s share? Finally, have you been keeping up with Today?
