Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos, who has been investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, has warned neighbors that the suspect could strike again.

Speaking to NBC News Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said, “we believe we know why he did this.” He added that authorities “believe it was targeted”, though they are “not 100% sure of that.” Brian Entin, reporting for Brian Entin Investigates, spoke with Laura, one of Nancy’s neighbors, who said the sheriff’s remarks left her feeling uneasy.

She said she had spent time considering what “targeted” might mean and speculated on four possible reasons someone like Nancy could have been chosen, including, ransom, living alone, being elderly, or being particularly vulnerable. It comes after a mystery man who claimed he “saw Nancy 5 days ago” offered chilling new proof.

The neighbor said the idea made her feel very “uncomfortable,” especially living so close to Nancy’s house.

Entin and Laura also felt the statement from Nanos was “ambiguous,” adding further confusion and layer of anxiety for the residents. Nancy’s neighbor questioned whether the suspect might have been looking for someone with easy access to their home or perceived wealth, reflecting ongoing concern in the community.

Nanos advised residents in the Catalina Foothills area to remain alert.

“It’d be silly to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry about it. You’re not his target,’” he said. “Don’t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe.”

A nationwide search has so far produced several leads, including DNA evidence and ransom notes, but no suspect has been identified in connection to Nancy’s abduction from her home in Tucson Arizona, 41 days ago.

Authorities have chosen not to discuss the suspected motive publicly, citing concerns that revealing details could compromise the ongoing investigation.

Several individuals have been questioned as part of the inquiry. A California man was arrested on suspicion of sending false ransom notes and now faces federal charges, though officials say he does not appear to be connected to Nancy’s disappearance. A delivery driver was also held for questioning and later released after authorities determined he was not involved.

Sheriff Nanos has urged residents to stay alert and take precautions. Investigators continue to review footage, follow up on leads, and build a timeline of events leading to Nancy disappearance. Authorities are also encouraging neighbours to report any unusual activity.

With no suspect yet in custody, the warning from the sheriff serves as a reminder that caution remains important. Residents in similar areas are advised to stay aware while the investigation continues.
