Jenna Bush Hager Announced Big News After 16 Years With Today

Jenna and her fraternal twin sister, Barbara, are the daughters of the 43rd U.S. president, George W. Bush. The two are also the granddaughters of the 41st U.S. president, George H. W. Bush.

Following her father’s presidency, Jenna established herself as an author and a television personality. She’s worked for outlets including Southern Living and The Today Show.

Originally hired for Today back in 2009, Jenna eventually took on co-hosting duties alongside Hoda Kotb for the show’s fourth hour. After Kotb left the show in early 2025, Jenna hosted alongside a rotating number of guests until Sheinelle Jones was announced as her permanent co-host.

After around 16 years with Today, Jenna announced a new career pivot: scripted television. On Tuesday, January 13th, 2026, the mother of three shared she would serve as an executive producer for the upcoming NBC drama, Protection. Taking to social media, Jenna showcased reports of the story, from Variety to Deadline.

The series will revolve around a missing U.S. Marshal who falls in the line of duty. Following this, a family of law enforcement agents becomes targeted by a mysterious assassin. The project falls under the first-look deal Jenna had with Universal Studio Group through her Thousand Voices production company. This also marks Jenna’s first scripted television project.

Jenna Bush Hager Also Talked About The Show During A Recent Episode Of Today

Jenna will work on the project with Quantico creator Josh Safran. They will both serve as executive producers with Jenna’s executive Ben Spector.

Protection will join a reboot of The Rockford Files, which also received a greenlight for a pilot. NBC is expected to order three to four drama pilots and the same number of comedy pilots for this year’s January-May pilot window.

Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, recently spent the holidays looking at pilot scripts. The announcement of the two pilots came out around a week after the break.

Jenna also recently talked about her new series with her new Today co-host, Sheinelle Jones. During the January 14 episode of the talk show, she shared, “It’s about different levels of law enforcement, some based on Secret Service.”

Reflecting her own family’s political background, Jenna teased, “So, y’all know I know about that.” During the discussion at the New York studio, she continued, “So, we’re hopefully going to start shooting this spring, cross your fingers, y’all. I’m so excited.”

At the moment, Jenna also teased that the show would have a big twist, noting she was heavily involved with the pitch process as she got into the pilot’s storyline. As she mused, “I joined all the pitches because every time, to watch these sometimes jaded executives’ — not all of you, not all of you — faces drop with the twist. The twist is so good.”
