Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has come under fire after he was spotted sitting near courtside at a University of Arizona basketball game on Saturday night, despite leading the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.
According to images shared by Fox News Digital, Nanos was seated near the front row at the Arizona Wildcats’ game against Oklahoma State at McKale Center in Tucson. The sighting has quickly sparked backlash online, with some questioning his presence while the high-profile investigation remains ongoing.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has been leading the investigation into the disappearance of Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show star Savannah Guthrie.
Nancy was last seen on January 31 at her home in Tucson, Arizona, and was reported missing the following day after she failed to attend routine plans.
Her home was later declared a crime scene after blood found on the porch was confirmed to belong to her. Authorities believe she did not leave voluntarily, and the FBI is assisting local law enforcement with the search.

Police have recently carried out a new search at Nancy’s Arizona home, focusing on a septic tank near the property. Officers were seen using specialist equipment to examine the area as part of the ongoing investigation into her disappearance. Officials have not confirmed whether anything was recovered during the search.
However, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department has now said there are currently no suspects or persons of interest in the case.
The department recently tweeted, “The Nancy Guthrie investigation is ongoing. Follow-up continues at multiple locations. No suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles have been identified. No scheduled press briefings. If any significant developments occur in the case, a press conference will be called.”

The sighting prompted strong reactions on social media from supporters of the Guthrie family as they tirelessly search for answers in the disappearance of their mother. One person wrote on X, “Can we get a statement of why the sheriff was at a basketball game instead of helping this family find their mother?? We deserve that answer.”
Another person pleaded, “TURN THE CASES OVER TO THE FBI.” Another chimed in, “Yeah you know the sheriff is too busy watching University of Arizona to answer questions.”
As of Sunday, February 8, the octogenarian has not been seen for 8 days. Her family has been pleading for her safe return on social media.
