A man who was held for questioning in connection with the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie has been released by authorities.

Nancy, the 84-year-old mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, has been missing since January 31, prompting a joint investigation by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and the FBI. On Tuesday, February 10, an individual was detained south of Tucson for questioning but was not charged.

CNN affiliate KNXV now reports that the man has been released, and investigators have concluded their search of a property in Rio Rico. This comes after an ex-FBI agent revealed the hidden codeword that Savannah used in her message to the kidnappers.

Reporter Lillian Donahue shared that her colleagues spoke to a man who claimed he was the one detained for questioning in relation to Nancy’s disappearance.

According to Donahue, the man stated that “he didn’t even know who this woman (Nancy Guthrie) was, that he works as a delivery driver.”

In a video interview with KNXV, the man recounted how his wife pulled over after realizing they were being followed by police.

He said, “They told me I was being detained for kidnapping.” The man, only known as “Carlos” detailed his three-word response to the police, “I asked them, ‘kidnapping of who?'”

“I told them … I might have delivered a package to their house but I never kidnapped anybody,” he added.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed in a statement that the department had brought someone in for questioning.

He announced, “Earlier today, Pima County Sheriff’s Department deputies detained a subject during a traffic stop south of Tucson.

“The subject is currently being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation. Additional information will be released as it becomes available.”

The announcement followed the Pima County Sheriff’s office releasing footage and photographs showing a figure with a concealed face wearing gloves, who appeared to have interfered with a camera positioned at the victim’s front entrance.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos posted on X, “Working with our partners – as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance.”

FBI Director Kash Patel has similarly shared photographs and two video clips of the individual via his X account.

In a statement, FBI Phoenix Public Affairs Officer Brooke Brennan explained, “Over the last eight days, the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department have been working closely with our private sector partners to continue to recover any images or video footage from Nancy Guthrie’s home that may have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible due to a variety of factors, including the removal of recording devices.

“The video was recovered from residual data located in backend system.”

Authorities are offering a $50,000 reward through the FBI for information that leads to locating her, “and/or the arrested and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.”
