Talk show host Stephen Colbert, 61, heavily criticized President Donald Trump‘s plan to acquire Greenland, which could allow the United States to conduct military operations, intelligence gathering, and training.
The satirical segment on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert came about after President Trump, 79, recently proposed a draft framework with NATO that would designate portions of Greenland as US sovereign base areas. The framework, negotiated between Trump and NATO Secretary General of NATO Mark Rutte, could alleviate Danish concerns that the US intends to annex the semi-autonomous territory, but the ownership question is complex.
Although the US would be permitted to conduct military operations, intelligence gathering, and training, local development, such as rare earth mineral mining, would require Denmark’s approval.
During his segment, Colbert mocked the “concept of the deal” with Greenland as he started off, “Before we get into details of this framework, I have to warn you that there are none and that ‘the none’ part is very vague.”

After mocking the “concept of a deal,” the late-night host shared a screenshot of Trump’s post on his Truth Social platform. He quoted the president and repeated the words, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with Secretary General of NATO Mark Rute, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland.”
President Trump ended his post with, “This solution if consummated, will be a great one.”
Colbert went on and joked, “That’s a weird phrase. ‘If consummated?’ Is he gonna?”
The host stepped forward, raised an eyebrow at the camera, and asked, “Is he going to f— Greenland?”
After the audience erupted in laughter, Colbert finished off the segment, “There you go. That’s what you get right there.”

Despite the proposed framework, which emerged as a key consideration amid Trump’s address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, representatives from Greenland’s five political parties released a collective statement on behalf of the population, declaring that Greenlanders have no desire to become part of the US as a state.
The statement read, “We don’t want to be Americans, we don’t want to be Danish, we want to be Greenlanders. The future of Greenland must be decided by Greenlanders. No other country can meddle in this.”
They continued, “We must decide our country’s future ourselves – without pressure to make a hasty decision, without procrastination, and without interference from other countries.”
French President Emmanuel Macron is another opponent of Trump’s ambitions to acquire Greenland. He has advocated for deploying the European Union’s “bazooka,” which would bar US corporations from accessing the continent’s internal market.
Macron said, “It’s a deal that people jumped at, really fantastic for the USA, gets everything we wanted, including especially real national security and international security.”
