As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, attention has turned to the sheriff leading the investigation, and his unexpected connection to reality television.

In relation to the Nancy Guthrie case, her Today show co-host daughter Savannah Guthrie isn’t the only one who has appeared on television. The sheriff overseeing the investigation has also been involved in a TV project.
Sheriff Chris Nanos, who has been fielding questions at multiple press conferences since Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance, serves as the off-camera production partner for Desert Law, a docuseries that follows deputies patrolling more than 9,000 square miles of Arizona desert terrain.
The A&E series focuses on law enforcement work in remote areas of the state. Promotional material for the show describes, “Immersed in the pressure and danger of policing the desert night, the series captures a world where the spirit of the Old West still lingers and the fight for order never ends.”
Nanos does not appear on camera in the series, a decision sources close to the production say was his own. However, those same sources indicate that could change in a future season. They also say the possibility of Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance becoming part of the storyline for a second season has not been discussed.
Since the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, 84, Nanos has become a central public figure in the case. Guthrie, the mother of Savannah Guthrie, was reported missing earlier this month.
Authorities have described the situation as an active and ongoing investigation. Law enforcement officials have not released extensive details about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, citing the sensitivity of the case.
Initially, Nanos appeared alongside federal officials during joint press conferences with the FBI. In recent days, however, he has shifted toward conducting more individual interviews with media outlets, and some of those exchanges have drawn attention.
Following a February 18 interview with Newsmax, correspondent John Huddy wrote on social media, “Let’s just say he did not put out the welcome mat.”
Huddy’s post came after a sit-down in which Nanos pushed back against what he described as politically motivated criticism. During that appearance, Nanos said, “This isn’t an election campaign — that’s three years down the road.”
A day earlier, during a February 17 interview with NewsNation reporter Brian Entin, the tone was similarly direct. In a YouTube recap of the exchange, Entin described how the sheriff addressed him before the formal interview began. “You have questions for me,” Nanos told him, “and I have questions for you.”
Despite the media buzz, officials continue to stress the seriousness of the case. Nancy Guthrie remains missing, and authorities have reiterated that investigative efforts are ongoing. Search teams have canvassed areas within the county, and law enforcement has asked anyone with information to come forward.
