Savannah Guthrie debuted her new voice on TODAY following major throat surgery and weeks of vocal rest.
The TV star made a guest appearance on Friday morning’s broadcast before returning to her usual schedule on Monday.
In a video detailing Savannah‘s health journey, the news anchor explained that she reached out to Dr. Peak Woo, an otolaryngologist at Mount Sinai and a leading voice specialist, after noticing her voice deepening and becoming raspier over time.
“What I saw was a hemorrhagic polyp on one side and vocal nodule on the other side,” Dr. Woo told Today about what he discovered after examining Savannah’s vocal cords, which he said could result from talking too much or too loudly.
He also said that if the condition was left untreated, Savannah’s voice could get worse, making it painful to speak.
Savannah agreed to the surgery, which she underwent earlier this month, and had to refrain from speaking entirely for eight days thereafter while she recovered.
The procedure appeared to be life-changing for the journalist, who broke down in tears upon hearing her voice for the first time afterward.
“Good morning, today is Tuesday, Jan. 13th, 2026,” Savannah said, testing her voice out with her usual morning greeting on the show.
“It sounds so good, I could cry,” she reacted. “Once again, I was speechless.”
“The voice is really an expression of your soul. And when you suddenly restore it, it can be emotional,” Dr. Woo explained in the video.
Since the surgery, Savannah has gradually regained her ability to use her voice more, now working daily with a voice therapist to strengthen her vocal cords.
The TV personality revealed she couldn’t be happier with the results in her first time back in the studio since having the surgery.
Savannah sat beside her co-hosts, Dylan Dreyer, Sheinelle Jones, Craig Melvin, and Carson Daly, as they discussed her experience, and said she plans to continue treating her voice delicately even when she returns to work.
“I’m supposed to just be a little more careful with it,” the mom of two told her colleagues.
“So, I’m back Monday morning, and I’ll be able to do the job, and I think like, during the day I’ll try to be quiet.”
Savannah revealed in December that she was taking time off to undergo the procedure and allow her voice to recover.
Sheinelle filled in for Savannah in the meantime, which overlapped with her new role as co-host of Today’s fourth hour with Jenna Bush Hager.
In early December, it was announced that Sheinelle would become the permanent co-host of the segment after Hoda Kotb‘s departure.
The show officially kicked off on January 12th.
