Inside Rob Reiner’s oldest child Tracy’s private life as she stays out spotlight

Rob Reiner’s oldest daughter Tracy lives a quiet life, and even after her father and his wife, Michele, were brutally murdered by their son Nick Reiner, she stays out the limelight

Rob Reiner’s daughter, Tracy, never seemed to have an interest in being in the spotlight, even though her super-famous dad was an iconic actor-turned-filmmaker.

Born in 1946 to Michael Henry and Penny Marshall, the late Academy Award-nominated director officially adopted Tracy and became her main father figure when he married her mother from 1971 to 1981. Even after the tragic murder of Rob and his second wife, Michele Reiner, last month, Tracy has continued to avoid media attention, except for the one time she made a public statement about the horrific incident.

“I came from the greatest family ever,” Tracy revealed to NBC News last month after Rob and Michele were discovered stabbed to death in their Los Angeles home in mid-December. Rob and Michele’s son Nick, 32, was arrested shortly after for allegedly killing his parents, and he’s been charged with double homicide.

“I don’t know what to say,” Tracy continued, adding, “I’m in shock.” Tracy is Rob’s oldest child, coming ahead of his other children, Romy, Jake, and Nick.

Her mother, Penny, got pregnant with her when she was a 19-year-old student at the University of New Mexico, while her biological father, Michael Henry, was an 18-year-old college football player at the time. Penny divulged to Newsweek in 2012 why she decided to go through with the pregnancy.

“This was 1963 — there were no legal abortions in the U.S., and I wasn’t going to go to Juárez, you know?” she told the news outlet. “Girls then were going horseback riding to try to end their pregnancies. I didn’t do that. I figured I made my bed, so I’m going to sleep in it. My third choice was moving to Amarillo. I’d never been there, but I was thinking I’d go and have the baby by myself.

She further shared, “But instead Mickey said, ‘Let’s get married.’ He was a great guy. We ended up getting married the weekend John F. Kennedy got shot. All that was on the TV during our honeymoon in a motel was the funeral, which set the tone.”

Penny also revealed to the news publication that her first ex-husband had moved to Colorado after their divorce and ended up getting remarried and fathering another daughter.

At the age of 8, Tracy moved with her mom to California. At the time, Penny’s older brother was a comedy writer who was working with Rob’s dad, Carl Reiner, on a project. That connection led to Penny and Rob meeting.

After they got married in 1971, Rob started to raise Tracy as his own child and gave her his last name. Penny had mentioned to Newsweek that she had “sent off” Tracy to “college while wearing a Playboy Bunny suit, because it was during the shooting of that episode of Laverne & Shirley.”

Tracy later followed in the same career path as Rob and Penny, who were both actors, going on to land the memorable role of Betty “Spaghetti” Horn in the 1992 film A League of Their Own. While talking with the Hollywood Sentinel in 2021, Tracy recalled some of her early experiences of being in Hollywood.

“The times that I would visit here were always a holiday, so it was just a dreamland to me,” she explained. “There was a lot more television shows (in L.A.), and my Mom was sort of a junk-food freak and she would get like fritos and sodas for breakfast and I would always go home completely sick, but I thought it was the greatest time here, so when I finally moved here, there was a whole new world here that I was never asked to participate in. Like, I didn’t know the personality rules that were going to show up.”

Tracy now has a blended family that includes five children, according to Page Six.
