Fox News host Bill Hemmer steps away from “America’s Newsroom” after heartbreaking family loss
Viewers of Fox News’ America’s Newsroom recently noticed the absence of one of the program’s familiar faces. Host Bill Hemmer has been off the air after the death of his mother, Georganne Mary Hemmer, a loss the veteran journalist confirmed in an emotional message shared with followers online.
The longtime broadcaster revealed the news in an Instagram tribute, posting a photo alongside a heartfelt message about the woman he described as the guiding force in his life.
“I will forever miss this beautiful smile,” Hemmer wrote, remembering his mother as someone who was “clever, fun, funny, always guided by her faith.”
Georganne Mary Hemmer died at the age of 86. In the message, Hemmer reflected on the values that defined her life, emphasizing that faith and family were always at the center of everything she did.
“Her two priorities were God and family,” he wrote, noting that she leaves behind five children, eleven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
A family loss that deeply touched the Fox News community
The announcement quickly drew an outpouring of support from colleagues, public figures, and viewers.
Dana Perino, Hemmer’s co-anchor on America’s Newsroom, responded publicly to his tribute, offering words of comfort during the difficult time.
“And how wonderful is it that you have her smile,” Perino wrote in a message of support. “We are with you in this time of grief and will be here on the other side.”
Representative Andy Biggs also shared condolences, posting on X that he and his wife were praying for Hemmer and his family while they mourn the loss.
According to an obituary, a funeral service for Georganne Hemmer took place on Sunday, followed by her burial on Monday in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Remembering his parents and a life centered on family
Hemmer’s tribute also reflected on another recent loss in his family. His father, William R. Hemmer, died on February 1, 2025.
“Georganne Mary Hemmer is reunited for eternity with my Dad, the love of her life,” Hemmer wrote in the message, expressing his belief that his parents are together again.
The Fox News host concluded the tribute with a deeply personal message to his mother.

“Rest forever in gentle peace, Ma. I love you.”
Hemmer, 61, has been a prominent presence at Fox News for nearly two decades. He joined the network in 2005 after spending ten years at CNN, where he began working in 1995.
Over the years, he has reported on many major national events. Shortly after arriving at Fox, he was sent to Louisiana to cover Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He later played a leading role in the network’s coverage of tragedies such as the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012 and the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
In addition to co-hosting America’s Newsroom, Hemmer also leads Fox’s “Bill-Board” coverage during election nights.

For now, however, the veteran journalist has stepped away from the broadcast desk as he mourns the loss of his mother and spends time with family.
America’s Newsroom airs weekdays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. ET. Hemmer has not yet indicated when he plans to return to the program.
